Invitation to Submit an Article
to TPG
You are invited to submit an article,
paper, or guest column based upon your geological experiences or activities to
the American Institute of Professional Geologists to be included in "The
Professional Geologist" (TPG) bi-monthly journal. The article can address a
professional subject, be technical in nature, or comment on a state or national
issue affecting the profession of geology. Article submissions for TPG should be
800 to 3200 words in length. Photos, figures, tables, etc. are always welcome!
Author instructions are available on the AIPG National Website.
AIPG Members that are interested in becoming an
Associate Editor are required to fill out a
questionnaire available on the AIPG National Website.
Budgetary
Developments May Results in Elimination of
Ohio Geological Survey
In the event you haven’t
yet learned of the budgetary developments in Ohio which will result in the
elimination of the Ohio Geological Survey, please review the attached
summary from Mac Swinford, Assistant Chief. It’s apparent that
without the rapid and unequivocal support of Ohio Geological Survey
constituents, the citizens of Ohio will no longer be able to enjoy the work
and services provided by the Ohio Geological Survey to support the state’s
economy and the public commonweal.

immediately.
National Science Foundation - Earth
Science Brochure
The Earth Science Literacy Initiative (ESLI),
funded by the National Science Foundation, has gathered and codified the
underlying understandings of Earth sciences into a succinct document that
will have broad-reaching applications in both public and private arenas. It
establishes the “Big Ideas” and supporting concepts that all Americans
should know about Earth sciences.

Fulbright
Scholar Program for US Faculty and Professionals
The Fulbright Scholar Program offers 69 grants in lecturing, research or
combined lecturing/research awards in environmental science, including 4
Fulbright Distinguished Chairs, the African Regional Research Program and the
Middle East and North Africa Regional Research Program. Even better, faculty and
professionals in environmental science also can apply for one of the 144 "All
Discipline" awards open to all fields.
The application deadline is August 1, 2009. U.S. citizenship is required. For a

AIPG National Student Scholarship Winners Announced
The AIPG Academic Education Committee carefully
reviewed the 29 applications received and the seven students to receive

Kern, Montana State University, Montana; Andrea McHugh, Georgia Southern
University, Georgia; Anna Perry, University of Nevada-Reno, Nevada; Daniel Slane,

York; and Mark Spindler, University of Alaska-Anchorage, Alaska. The essays from the scholarship winners will be
published in the next issue of TPG. Congratulations!

COPUS - A New Avenue for Outreach for AIPG.

The Coalition on the Public Understanding of Science (COPUS) kicked off Year
of Science 2009 (YoS2009) -- a national, yearlong, grassroots celebration--this
week in Boston at the annual meeting of the Society for Integrative and
Comparative Biology. COPUS, which represents more than 500 organizations, is
celebrating how science works, who scientists are, and why science matters. Ira
Flatow, host of Science Friday, broadcast every week on National Public
Radio, launched the week's events with a plenary presentation encouraging
scientists to get involved in communicating and sharing the excitement of
science at every opportunity. |

and Engineering Employment at the State Level
Geoscience Currents #20 reports on geoscience and science and engineering
employment at the state level. Science and engineering employment comprises a
small percentage (~2%) of every state's total employment.
Geoscience employment comprises an average of 12% of the total state science

American Geological Institute
Geoscience and Public Policy Student Summer Internship
The American Geological Institute seeks outstanding geoscience students with
a strong interest in federal science policy for a 12 week internship.
Representing the geoscience community in Washington D.C., the program actively
works with Congress and federal agencies to foster sound public policy in areas
affecting the geosciences. Interns will gain a first-hand understanding of the
legislative process and the operation of executive branch agencies. They will
also hone their writing and Web publishing skills. Interns are given a stipend
through the generous support of the American Institute of Professional
Geologists. There are also opportunities for Fall and Spring internships.
