for Papers
The 7th Biennial
Meeting of the Interstate Technical Group on
Abandoned Underground Mines (ITGAUM) will be
held in Kansas City, Missouri March 26-28,
2008. The theme for this meeting will be Mine
Planning and Remediation Foundation for the
Future. We are actively seeking participants
among state and Federal agencies, consultants,
mining companies, and other interested parties
who possess interest in, or practice methods of
addressing abandoned underground mines needing
remediation and closure.
Current meeting plans include a
day trip to Joplin, Missouri to see construction
at Route 249 (Range Line Road bypass) which is
being built over abandoned underground lead-zinc
workings. While in Joplin, we will also visit
the Schifferdecker Museum to see the world-class
collection of mining-related exhibits there. A
second half-day trip will also be held in the
Kansas City area to see the underground mine
practices that create underground storage
space. Kansas City has the largest underground
storage space resources of any city in the
world.
There may also be the possibility
of a post-meeting field trip to an active deep
underground mine in the Kansas City area,
depending upon interest and
We are also seeking submissions
of papers and presentations for this meeting.
Abstracts should be submitted by September 1,
2007 with authors to be notified of acceptance
on or about September 15, 2007. Sessions will
be organized according to the abstracts
submitted, with individual state DOT
presentations delivered the first part of the
morning of March 26. Papers that address
current topics of mine remediation, abandoned
mine detection by geophysical means, and
state-of-the-art mine practice will receive
session priority. Session overflow may add a
night poster session depending upon number and
quality of submittals. Submit abstracts to
