The 7th Biennial Meeting of the Interstate Technical Group on Abandoned Underground Mines (ITGAUM) will be held in Kansas City, Missouri March 26-28, 2008.  The theme for this meeting will be “Mine Planning and Remediation – Foundation for the Future.”  We are actively seeking participants among state and Federal agencies, consultants, mining companies, and other interested parties who possess interest in, or practice methods of addressing abandoned underground mines needing remediation and closure.

Current meeting plans include a day trip to Joplin, Missouri to see construction at  Route 249 (Range Line Road bypass) which is being built over abandoned underground lead-zinc workings.  While in Joplin, we will also visit the Schifferdecker Museum to see the world-class collection of mining-related exhibits there.  A second half-day trip will also be held in the Kansas City area to see the underground mine practices that create underground storage space.  Kansas City has the largest underground storage space resources of any city in the world.

There may also be the possibility of a post-meeting field trip to an active deep underground mine in the Kansas City area, depending upon interest and

We are also seeking submissions of papers and presentations for this meeting.  Abstracts should be submitted by September 1, 2007 with authors to be notified of acceptance on or about September 15, 2007.  Sessions will be organized  according to the abstracts submitted, with individual state DOT presentations delivered the first part of the morning of March 26.  Papers that address current topics of mine remediation, abandoned mine detection by geophysical means,  and state-of-the-art mine practice will receive session priority.  Session overflow may add a night poster session depending upon number and quality of submittals.  Submit abstracts to George.Davis@modot.mo.gov for consideration.
